PI.29.a1 Pituitary adenoma discovered at autopsy (view of the base of the brain). In addition to the sella turcica, this lesion occupies the suprasellar region, behind the optic chiasm, which can be compressed. Pituitary adenomas are classically referred to as chromophobe, acidophilic (or eosinophilic) or basophilic, depending on the tinctorial affinity of the majority of the cells (namely with MT). Cytoplasmic staining is a relatively poor indicator of secretory activity, which is better demonstrated by immunohistochemistry.
