PII.01.a1 Astrocytoma (frontal section). The cerebral cortex of the left hemisphere appears obliterated and the white matter appears diffusely swollen. Owing to their poorly delimited character, these astrocytomas are often referred to as "diffuse" in order to distinguish them from other astrocytomas, and namely from pilocytic astrocytomas ("pilocytomas") (see I.01.a1). Astrocytomas are classified in several histologic subtypes.
